Place koh Samui Surat thani

In his annual birthday address, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej consistently highlights the importance of preserving the environment and urges responsible agencies to undertake efforts to keep the country clean and green and to make conservation efforts one of the priorities in the quest to achieve sustainable development.

Taking heed of this royal advice, the Koh Samui District Office and Koh Samui Municipality are leading efforts to clean up the tropical island paradise as a birthday gift to His Majesty the King on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s 80th birthday on 5 December 2007.

This initiative is being promoted under the ‘Keep Samui Clean Days’ campaign theme and also marks the start of Samui’s peak travel season. It also reflects efforts to keep the island resort, billed as ‘the Emerald of the Gulf of Thailand’, clean and pristine.

The Koh Samui District Office and Koh Samui Municipality is involving local members of the community and will be working hand-in-hand with other state agencies and private sector organizations.

Koh Samui authorities have pledged to make the ‘Keep Samui Clean’ theme a permanent element of the island’s development and management policy with efforts maintained beyond the official launch of the campaign during 1-8 December 2007.

Japan Food Fair 2007: Mega Food Festival in Thailand Original taste of Japanese food, unseen products from agriculture and fisheries
December 6-9, 2007

JETRO Bangkok has planned to launch “Japan Food Fair 2007” for the third year during December 6-9, 2007 with a wide range of top quality Japanese agriculture and fishery products and original Japanese food to be presented by more than 70 booths at Bangkok Convention Center, Central World Plaza.

The Fair will be organized under the concept: Discover Real Japanese Cuisine: The Gift of Nature. Thais who love Japanese food and food business operators will have a chance to experience the quality of authentic Japanese cuisines among more than 70 booths whose best delicious selections importantly include, for example, low-calorie seafood, famous ingredients, and fresh fruits directly imported from Japan.

The Fair is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors from Thailand and neighboring countries. It will also serve as a significant forum for business talks and information exchange on a variety of agricultural and fisheries products.

Mr. Yoichi Kato, President of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), said the increasing popularity of Japanese food among Thais and the trend for healthy food have convinced the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan to introduce Japan Food Fair 2007 for the third time in Thailand.

“It’s very much indeed an auspicious occasion to hold the event this year as part of the celebration of the 120th Anniversary of Japan-Thailand Relations It’s a mega food fair to display food and raw materials in Thailand for businessmen in the Japanese food industry and Japanese food lovers. Our target groups are those business operators in Thailand and from adjacent countries,” he said.

JETRO operates the Fair, which is fully funded and presented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. Among 52 companies participating in the Fair, 42 companies are from Japan and 10 are companies in Thailand with either Thai and Japanese partnership and purely owned by Thais.

The Fair also features “Supermarket Zone” for the visitors to enjoy shopping with varieties of fruits, vegetables, and products from fisheries from Japan at more reasonable prices. The visitors can also enjoy activities such as Japanese food shows from Japanese chefs who will demonstrate original styles, the display of products from agricultural and fisheries industries. Many of them have neither been imported to Thailand nor displayed nor for sale in Thailand, such as Unshuu Mandarin oranges. The orange will be introduced for the first time in Thailand. Importantly, all of them are directly imported from Japan.

Mr. Kato added, “Japan Food Fair is held in nine cities in seven countries around the world. But the Japan Food Fair in Thailand is the most important since it was invested by 32 million yen or 8.0 million baht.

The market for Japanese food in Thailand has high growth potential since Thai consumers are interested in Japanese agricultural and marine products. In addition, both countries have long-term relationship. Moreover, Thai consumers love dining at Japanese restaurants. The taste of Japanese food is favored by Thai comparing with other foreign cuisines. Also, Japanese food is good for health because they are low in calories. Thai people really love Japanese food at heart.

Mr. Seiji Tazo, Director of JETRO Trade Promotion, said there are 750 Japanese restaurants in Thailand. This Year 2007, it is expected that Japan Food Fair will draw more than 20,000 visitors and bring up 2,500 business talks and 480 business deals. In 2004, there were more than 3,900 business talks and 413 business deals were concluded. In 2005, since the number of days was reduced from five to four, it brought more than 2,500 business talks and 480 business deals were reached.

JETRO has expected the increase in trade talks between Thailand and Japan and planned to help the operators of Japanese restaurants in Thailand to discover more choices of raw material products under the concept “Discover Real Japanese Cuisine: The Gift of Nature”.

December 6-7, 2007: 10.00-18.00: Business Days

(dpa) - A Japanese tourist was slain and robbed over the weekend while visiting Thailand's ancient capital of Sukhothai during Loy Krathong, or the Water Candle festival, police said Monday.

The body of the tourist, identified only by her first name Nomoko, was found with her throat slashed and her possessions stolen Sunday in the grass at the side of the road leading to one of the more remote ruins of the Sukhothai cultural heritage site.

Police said the woman rented a bicycle on Saturday to visit a temple on the outskirts of the main Sukhothai complex, a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Sukhothai Police Chief Major General Thirrin Padungchiwit ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators of the murder.

"This is a priority case because it has damaged the reputation of Sukhothai and the entire country," said Thirrin.

The ancient ruins of Sukhothai, which was Thailand's main kingdom between 1250 to 1376, is a major tourist draw during the Loy Krathong festival, observed in Thailand on the night of the full moon in November by floating small vessels with candles and decorations in lakes, ponds and rivers to carry away one's sins.

Altogether 12 people, including the Japanese tourist, died during this year's Loy Krathong, victims of firecrackers, road accidents, brawls and at least one murder.

1 November - 31 January 2008: Lop Buri Province

Deep in some horticulture website comes a line on how kids love sunflowers for their brightness and their bigness. But as we take a Sunday drive to where Thailand's rice fields become rolling countryside and huge hills of marble and granite, a child's fascination appears strikingly more evident among the adults swarming the edges of field after field of sunflowers, or thantawan as they are called here.

Certainly no honey or fragrance has drawn them. Crowding under the circus-like canopies of festive yellow, blue and green stripes, perhaps they see what Van Gogh saw. Maybe they hope to follow the flower's face turning from east to west, drinking in as much sunlight as it can in a day. When fully grown, the flowers will stop chasing the sun and stand still until their heads droop and their vivid colour evaporates and someone comes along and picks them for what has been described as the ultimate bird food. Although, the mineral content of the disk flowers - the hundreds of spikes that fill the face - make it an amazing human treat. Sunflower seeds are said to be in the same protein league as beef and have more iron than any other food except egg yolks and liver.
Whether it's the vast spread of bright colour or the up-close burst of life or just a pleasant excuse for a drive in the country, more than a million sunflower pilgrims head to central Thailand each November to January. Farmers in 13 Thai provinces plant sunflowers in rotation with other crops. The sunflower produces the world's second most important and valuable oil seed (coconut oil is the first). Some provinces are far more scenic than others, such as Mae Hong Son, but not so convenient for a day trip.
Lop Buri and Sara Buri are the closest sunflower provinces to Bangkok.

“Loi Krathong” is traditionally performed on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which usually falls on some day in November. The floating of a ‘Krathong' – a banana–leaf cup – is intended to float away ill fortune as well as to express apologies to Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess. Some believe that the ritual is meant to worship the Buddha's footprint on the bank of the Narmada River, while others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of the Lord Buddha's great disciples.

The Loi Krathong Festival is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, especially where there are rivers, canals or sources of water, with different unique characteristics.

This year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has joint with Educational Institution and Thai Baot Association to present the Electric Float Procession from Taksin Bridge to Rama VIII Bridge and the 12 lighten up buildings and historical sites along Chao Praya River during Loi Krathong Festival.

As for the public, people usually make banana-leaf cups to float them onto the river although there exist some uniquely different aspects in certain communities. For example, the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai, during which balloon-like ‘Khom Loi' lanterns including the ‘Khom Fai' – a fire lantern – and ‘Khom Khwan' – a smoke lantern – are flown into the sky as a symbol of worship to Phrathat Chulamani in heaven. Making a Khom Loi will need a lot of artistic skills as well as scientific techniques, just like the ones used in making a balloon. Tracing paper or Sa paper is used to make air bags of various shapes. It is believed that flying a Khom Loi is like flying grief and ill fortune away from ourselves or our home.

In Tak province, the Loi Krathong Sai Festival is celebrated, which reflects the unity of the local people. Groups of people gather at the river banks, each bringing along thousands of Krathong made fro m coconut shells with dried wicks made from coconut flesh anointed with oil or ash for their inflammable as well as durable quality. There, they sing and dance with merriment.
The span of the Ping River that passes by the provincial city of Tak is not deeper than one's waist, with underwater sand bars curving into different shapes, forcing the current to meander. When the lit Krathongs are floated onto the right current, one after another, they would meander along and make a beautiful and twinkling curving line, or Sai in Thai, amid the darkness of the night.
The famous Loi Krathong and Candle Festival in Sukhothai province features a procession of offerings, including Phanom Mak – the betel offering – and Phanom Dok Mai – the floral offering – carried by beautiful girls, as well as banana-leaf floats accompanied by the so-called Nang Nopphamat beauty queens.
The Phanom Mak and Phanom Dok Mai offerings are for the homage paying rite at King Ramkhamhaeng the Great's monument in the heart of the ancient city of Sukhothai. After that, people as well as visitors gather and float the Krathongs together on ponds, known as Traphang, inside the ancient city. The bright candle light from the floated Krathongs and the cool breeze of November together lends a pleasant atmosphere for all participants.
Besides the well-known Loi Krathong Festival, there is another tradition that is based on a similar belief but is celebrated on the full moon night of the eleventh lunar month. Known as the Illuminated Boat Procession , the celebration takes place in the Northeastern provinces of Thailand that is located on the Mekong River. Illuminated boats of approximately 10 – 12 metres long are made from banana stalks or bamboo by villagers. The boats contain sweets, the so-called Khao Tom Mat – stuffed fried sticky rice – and objects to be donated inside, while decorated with flowers, incense sticks, candles, lamps and tinder outside. At present, the boats are created into various shapes such as important places or mythical creatures, which lend a bright and breathtaking sight when the boats illuminated by thousands of lamps are floated onto the river.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has been unanimously voted by readers of the TTG group of travel trade publications as the Best National Tourism Organisation (NTO) of 2007.

The publications, which include TTG Asia, TTG China, TTGmice, and TTG-Btmice China, have a total of 61,782 readers.

The group’s Singapore-based managing director Darren Ng said. “The annual TTG Travel Awards, presented by TTG Publishing, seeks to honour the most outstanding performers in the Asia-Pacific’s travel industry.

“This award is bestowed each year upon excellent organizations of the travel trade within the Asia Pacific region that have shown strong commitment towards service excellence,” he said.

The award was conferred at the 18th TTG Travel Awards 2007 Ceremony and Gala Dinner to be held in conjunction with the IT&CMA and CTW 2007 Asia-Pacific event on 25 October 2007 at Sofitel Centara Grand, Bangkok.

TAT Governor Mrs Phornsiri Manoharn said the award was a recognition of the creativity and professionalism of all the TAT staff.

“The tourism industry is becoming extremely competitive every year,” she said. “To maintain Thailand’s marketing profile has become a hugely challenging exercise, and we are glad to see that our efforts are being recognised by the esteemed readers of the TTG Group.”

This year, TAT has made some major adjustments in its marketing strategies, with one of the key changes being a return to the well-known Amazing Thailand tourism campaign slogan that proved so successful in 1998-99.

The range of Thai tourism products and services have been analysed in the wake of new trends in consumer behaviour and re-classified into seven clear categories to be marketed in a clearly focussed and segmented manner, highlighting key “assets” such as traditional Thai hospitality, cuisine, heritage, health and wellness, etc.

Cooperative marketing activities have also been stepped up, especially with industry partners such as the airlines and the private sector.

In January – June 2007, international visitor arrivals totalled 6.95 million, up 3.30% over the same period of 2006, with strong growth in arrivals from Europe, the Middle East and South Asia. This year, TAT is projecting 14.8 million international visitor arrivals, up from the 13.82 million arrivals in 2006.

Phimai Historical Park lies far off the beaten tourist track so that makes for an ideal day of absorbing the fascinating architecture of the Khmer. Built as an important regional center of the Khmer, Phimai faces south toward Angkor.
The white sandstone sanctuary was built during the 16th Buddhist century and additions were made at the the beginning of the following century during the reign of King Jayavoraman VII.
The largest stone sanctuary in Thailand measures 565 by 1,030 meters and is protected by a moat and flanked by the Moun and Chackarat rivers.
The central courtyard has 3 towers, or Prangs. The main tower is decorated with lintels and bas reliefs showing scenes or episodes from Ramayana; the epic battle between Rama and Ravana, a demon with many heads and arms who had stolen Rama's wife.
The secondary towers are made of laterite and red sandstone. One has the sculpture of a seated King Jayavarman VII.
For a remarkable viewing of a computer reconstruction of the temple site at Phimai, see Richard M. Levy's award winning site.
Location
About 60 km from Korat city.
From the Highway No. 2, turn right to Road No.206.

Chesa is a wonderful place to relax all afternoon. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, a pleasent snack at the bar, or of course a long and enjoyable evening of mouth watering food and good company.
Excellent, interesting, filling food created with a practical, no-nonsense sense of taste. Caesar salad is fresh and bold, made the Swiss way and includes Sprinz cheese. Salmon tartare arrives minced and cold, with rocket salad, and atop toasted bread. Basel-style salmon steak is accompanied by a fried onion sauce and is very good with its baby potatoes. Fried trout, sea bass, perch and lobster also appear in the menu’s seafood net. Consider something more wild, though, and hunt for excellent venison sirloin which brings brussels sprouts, red abbage, boletus mushrooms and cranberry sauce to create a forest-fresh, wintry meal. Grilled ostrich exudes a black pepper zinginess. Pasta and several cheese-laced dishes, including fondues, also tempt. Hot Swiss chocolate fondue is extremely decadent and very enjoyable when dipping in pineapple, strawberry, banana, cantaloupe and other fruit.

There is much to see and do in Chiang Mai, and one of the simplest and cheapest tourist activities is to wander the windy, narrow lanes of the old town and seek out the pretty moat with its ancient bastions. The city dates back 700 years and many historic structures have been well preserved. Perhaps the most distinctive is the 42m high ruined Chedi Luang which stands in the town centre.

The Tribal Museum, which offers a glimpse into the culture of the major hill tribes of Thailand. Here, you’ll find a massive collection of handicrafts, costumes, jewellery, ornaments, utensils, tools, musical instruments and ceremonial paraphernalia.

Wiang Kum Kam was the earliest historical settlement in the Chiang Mai area and the excavated ruins are worth seeing. Established around the 11th century, the city was flooded and abandoned in the early 18th century. A four-sided chedi and the layered brick pediments of Wat Kan Thom remain. An important four-piece inscribed stone slab from Wiang Kum Kam is on display at the Chiang Mai National Museum.

Bo Sang village is almost entirely devoted to the manufacture and sale of beautiful umbrellas and visitors can see how the umbrellas are made and decorated. A particularly good time to visit is during the colourful annual Umbrella Festival in mid-January.

Doi Inthanon National Park is home to Thailand’s tallest mountain (2,563m), which is just 47kms south of the city centre. The park covers 932 square kilometres, encompassing magnificent waterfalls and wild orchids. It is an ideal spot for some walking and picnicking, and camping is also permitted.

    A Book • A Photo Exhibition • Documentary Films
    November 8 - 25, 2007
ZEN Event Gallery, 8th Floor of ZEN@CentralWorld

On 8 November 2007, Editions Didier Millet will launch ‘Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom’, a multimedia event marking the 80th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 5 December.

The event showcases the work of 55 of the world’s leading photographers, including 11 from Thailand, who took part in a dramatic photo shoot throughout Thailand over a nine-day period in January 2007. Captured in unforgettable images are myriad different facets of Thailand: its peoples, traditions, landscapes and cityscapes, commerce and industry.

The event will have three parts:

    • the launch of a large-format pictorial book;
    • a major, multimedia exhibition of photographs taken during the shoot, to be held at ZEN Event Gallery, 8th Floor of ZEN@CentralWorld;
    • and the release of two documentary films on the project produced by MCOT (Thailand) and NGM Production (Paris)

The centrepiece is the book Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom. This spectacular 304-page, large-format (352 mm x 280 mm, portrait), coffee-table book is a portrait of Thailand today. It leads readers on a photographic journey through the country, showing many aspects of the nation’s life — cultural, social, economic, religious and natural. It includes a series of short, vivid photo-essays by six of these star photographers on various themes:

    • reverence for the King (Anuchai Secharunputong, Thailand)
    • the ongoing events in the south (Abbas, France; Charoon Thongnual, Thailand)
    • Thai boxing (Greg Gorman, USA)
    • the harvesting of birds’ nests (Éric Valli, France)
    • the care and treatment of AIDS patients by a Catholic priest
      (James Nachtwey, USA)
    • and the country’s colourful cabaret scene (Greg Gorman, USA)

A seventh ‘photo-essay’ is represented by stunning aerial views of Thailand taken by renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. His photographs feature throughout the book.

At the beginning of the book, the scene is set in an introduction by the distinguished writer on Thai culture and history and long-term Bangkok resident, William Warren. His many books include The Legendary American, The House on the Klong and Thai Style. Captions and additional text are by Nicholas Grossman, a Bangkok-based journalist who has worked with Let’s Go Publications, Bangkok Post and Thai Day.

Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom is a colourful and creative record of Thailand as it is today. It will be sold widely both in Thailand and internationally (USA, Europe and Australia). Editions of the book will be published in English and French.

The book will be launched at ZEN Event Gallery (Level 8) at ZEN @ CentralWorld on 8 November 2007 by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn, with a massive multimedia photography exhibition featuring over 400 images from the 9 Days shoot, both published and unpublished. The First Annual Bangkok Art & Photography Event 2007 by ZEN, sponsored by ZEN Department Store and organised by leading event presenter Ovation, will be one of the largest and state-of-the-art photography exhibitions Thailand has ever seen.

Visitors will be led through nine thematic halls which use different methods to display the images — projection, light boxes, single and double stands, television screens and normal stands, among others. Each room will provide visitors with a different experience based on nine different themes, including ‘A Tribute to the King’, ‘This is Thailand’ and ‘City of Angels’. The work of Greg Gorman, Chien-Chi Chang and James Nachtwey will be presented in special showcases. Canon Marketing (Thailand) Co. Ltd will handle all the printing needs of the exhibition.

Held over 2,500 square metres, the exhibition will run from 8 to 25 November 2007.

Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom will be on sale from November 2007 at the exhibition and major bookstores — AsiaBooks, B2S, Kinokuniya — at a cost of Baht 1,750.

    Srinarong Stadium, Surin

Organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand since 1960, the Surin Elephant
Round Up is a popular festival with international visitors. More than 300
elephants take part in the program, which includes a parade and welcoming
ceremony, a re-enactment of the "Capture of Wild Elephants," and an elephant
banquet, as well as regional cultural presentations and folk performances
    highlighting the traditions of Surin.

The Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village in Surin Province is the home of the Kui, who,
for centuries, have tended to and trained elephants for use throughout
Thailand. The majority of elephant owners and mahouts in Thailand today are
descendants of this "Kui" tribe (or "Suay" in Thai). In Thailand, elephants are
treated as part of the 'family' and the everyday life of the Thai elephant and
its keeper is the central theme of this world-famous festival.
