Early and unofficial results show the Palang Prachachon (People Power) party loyal to Thaksin Shinawatra has won an outright parliamentary majority in Sunday's election.
The PPP has taken 220 of the 400 seats in constituency voting, and has won 35 of the 80 party-list seats.
If those results are confirmed in official vote-counting Sunday night and Monday, the People Power party would easily capture more than the 241 seats needed to form a government itself - with no need of a coalition.

Observers cautioned there are several roadblocks ahead, even after final vote-counting is confirmed. For one thing, there are dozens of challenges alleging vote fraud, many against PPP candidates.

It must be stressed the results are unofficial, and based on a combination of exit polls and early vote results trickling in as reported by news media at polling stations.

Although Bangkok media agreed that early counting gave the PPP an outright majority, pollsters who conducted exit polls after the Sunday voting showed slight but important differences.

A Dusit Poll for Bangkok's Suan Dusit Rajabhat University forecast that PPP had won a majority of 256 seats, compared to 162 for the rival Democrat Party. However, Abac Poll of Assumption University said its survey showed PPP had won 202 seats, falling short of an outright majority, with the Democrats taking 146.

An Election Commission official told the Associated Press that with 40 per cent of the vote counted, the pro-Thaksin PPP has won 229 seats. The EC vote is official, but the agency has not actually released any final results.

Here are the BangkokPost.com figures as of 6.30pm (1130 GMT).

The constituency candidacy (total 400 seats) throughout Thailand.

People Power party: 220 seats
Democrat: 162 seats
Chart Thai: 40 seats
Puea Pandin: 30 seats
Ruamjaithai Chartpattana: 13 seats
Matchimathipataya: 10 seats
Pracharaj: 5 seats
Unofficial results of the party-list candidacy (total 80 seats)
People Power party: 34 seats
Democrat: 33 seats
Chart Thai: 4 seats
Puea Pandin: 7 seats
Ruamjaithai Chartpattana: 1 seat

The ASEAN Tourism Forum 2008 (ATF 2008), the annual travel industry summit of the 10 member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is to be held in Bangkok between 18-26 January, 2008.

The ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) is one of the most significant annual tourism promotional events in Asia, and is hosted on a rotational basis among the ASEAN member countries. Thailand is honored to be playing host for the 2008 ATF exchange, which is the show's fifth time in Thailand since its establishment.

The fair is made up of numerous high-level events, including a meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers, a meeting of the ASEAN NTOs, as well as airline meetings, press briefings, a tourism conference, and the popular Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) trade fair.

Bearing the theme, "Synergy of ASEAN towards Dynamic Unity in Diversity," the annual gathering of high-level ASEAN tourism public and private sector officials, airlines, and hundreds of buyers of ASEAN tourism products is designed to showcase the best of ASEAN tourism products and services.

Mrs. Phornsiri Manoharn, TAT Governor said, “Thailand is proud to once again welcome all delegates to ATF 2008. We last hosted the ATF in 2000, the first one of the 21st century.

“By 2008, we expect that many of the growth-drivers, such as low-cost airlines, open skies, improved road and rail networks, will be in place”.

“Clearly the issues of the future will be managing the growth to come. This is going to be our biggest challenge and we expect the ATF 2008 to provide the industry with an appropriate forum to openly discuss these issues in pursuit of constructive, positive, and long-term solutions.”

Mrs Phornsiri said TAT is working with Thai Airways International, the ASEAN airlines, travel trade associations, and other public and private sector organizations to ensure the success of this event.

She said the delegates will also get to see many of the changes taking place in Thailand, such as the new niche market products called “Amazing Wonders of Thailand,” as well as the new Royal Initiative Discovery products highlighting the long-term value of His Majesty the King’s sufficiency economy concepts.

The official programme will begin on 18 January, 2008, with the meetings of the ASEAN Tourism Task Forces at Sofitel Central Hotel. The meetings of the ASEAN National Tourism Organizations (NTOs) will held on 19-20 January.

A half-day meeting of the NTOs of ASEAN, China, Japan and Korea (ASEAN+3) will be held on 20 January at the Sofitel Central Hotel. The ASEAN Tourism Ministers, Airlines, Hoteliers and Travel Agents will hold their respective meetings on 21 January, 2008.

The buyer-and-seller trade show, called TRAVEX, will be held between 22-25 January at the Challenger 2, Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre, the world’s largest column-free exhibition hall, Asia’s largest indoor exhibition centre and Thailand’s largest ballroom. About 400 sellers, 450 buyers, and 150 media are expected to attend.

Several complimentary pre- and post-tours are being organised by TAT together with Thai Airways and the private sector to take buyers and the media to various ASEAN destinations in line with the theme "Synergy of ASEAN Towards Dynamic Unity in Diversity."

Mrs Phornsiri said, “ASEAN member countries are making continuous improvements in our tourism products such as new destinations and facilities. These tours will help introduce these exciting developments.”

The four-month long festival, which features 80 works of art created by over 70 highly talented sculptors from countries around the world, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Ireland, the United States and Thailand, covers an area of 12 rai (1.92 hectares or 4.74 acres).
The exhibition is divided into three zones.

The Royal Projects Zone
The sand sculptures in this zone depict themes related to Royal Projects initiated by His Majesty the King of Thailand and reflect the extraordinary achievements of His Majesty the King of Thailand during the 60 years of his glorious reign.

Her contribution to humanity was recognised by UNESCO in its description of the Princess Mother as a "World Great Personality of the 20th Century".
ZONE 2

The collection of 11 sand sculptures on display in the tent draw their inspiration from Thai history and characters depicted in Thai literature. For example, the giant yaak or demons that stand guard in front of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Sothorn Vararam Voraviharn temple - the sacred landmark of Chachoengsao province, Jatukarmramathep, King Naresuan the Great at war and a selection of characters from Thai literature.

In the northeastern part of Thailand, at the confluence of three small tributary streams in Udon Thani province, lies the Bronze Age village and cemetery site of Ban Chiang.

As may things in life, the revelation of Ban Chiang started as a accident. In 1966 Steven Young was wandering around a small village in Northeastern Thailand when he tripped on a tree root and fell. On the ground he saw rings, which turned out to be pottery shards. Further investigation revealed more fragments which had been revealed by gradual erosion.

Legend has it that Ban Chiang was discovered by a clumsy American college student, who fell in the road of the present town of Ban Chiang, and found ceramics eroding out of the road bed. The first excavations at the site were conducted in 1967 by archaeologist Vidya Intakosai, and this and subsequent excavations by the Fine Arts Department in Bangkok and the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Dr. Chester F. Gorman and Pisit Charoenwongsa have revealed evidence of prehistoric occupation beginning possibly as early as 3600 B.C. and continuing, probably intermittently, until about A.D. 200.
The Fine Arts Department of Thailand teamed with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology to begin the excavation of the site. Major excavations in 1974 and 1975 turned up the evidence that made anthropologists rethink the development of human civilization in Southeast Asia.
Ban Chiang makes a nice day trip from Udorn Thani. A museum has tools, pottery, artifacts and human skeleton on display. Spend some time looking over the site and then take a walk around the village.
The discovery has commercialized Ban Chiang somewhat, but it is still a very pleasant part of rural Thailand.

Small, malodourous and intimate, this is a grave for a informal occurrence to use some diet Italian yolk while cruising Sukhumvit Road. Santanastyle transposition ricochets off walls adorned by size photographs and memorabilia, which present a proximity friendliness to the room.

Good food, created with a nice variety of ingredients, and offered in an easy-to-eat style, including a modest but interesting buffet of salad, eggplant with cheese and other treats. The one-time-only access to the salad buffet also includes a one-layer or two-layer limit, so each piece of food must be placed on your plate as if it were measured sediment, because any overlapping titbits will be noted. For the main meal, vegetarian spaghetti is a pasta of mushrooms, garlic, tomatoes and green peppers. Salmon pizza drapes smoked salmon slices alongside rocket salad and melted feta cheese on a thin, delicious pizza. Roast beef in carpaccio, veal-breaded cutlets, and mixed seafood provide substantial alternatives to pasta. But pizza is the magic word here, blending recipes which mix and match mozzarella, anchovies, tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, salmon and others. The fun but functional menu provides tiramisu, ice cream and other desserts.

Philippines claim biased refereeing
Nakhon Ratchasima _ Thailand won six out of seven finals in women's boxing yesterday as the Philippines complained about biased officiating and labelled the tournament as a ''comic show.''

Thailand's Usanakorn Thawinsuwanawang (left) in action against Annalisa Cruz of the Philippines in the light-bantamweight final.
Light-flyweight Sopida Satumrum, left, defeats Alice Kate Apari of the Philippines. — PHOTOS BY TAWATCHAI KEMGUMNERD
The Thai winners were pinweight Dueannapha Ngamlam, light-flyweight Sopida Satumrum, light-bantamweight Usanakorn Thawinsuwanawang, bantamweight Tassamalee Thongjan, featherweight Peamwilai Laopeam and lightweight Sumittra Ngoksungnoen.

Flyweight Hansa Kadeewong was the only Thai who missed out a gold after being knocked out by Annie Albania in the first round. It was the Philippines' sole gold with six fighters from that country in the finals.

Sumittra, 17, was probably the most surprising champion. She defeated veteran Mitchel Martinez of the Philippines 21-11 in the lightweight final.
The lightweight class had been added to the tournament at the request of the Philippines. Manny Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, was furious at the judging in certain bouts. He waved his hands in protest before Ching Kuo Wu, chief of the International Amateur Boxing Association (Aiba), who was at the stadium.
Lopez said his boxers should have won at least two more gold medals particularly in the featherweight and lightweight divisions.
''The interest of our country shall prevail above all else,'' Lopez said. ''They should not dishonour us by giving one-sided decisions. I'd not like to be a part of this comic show in Thailand.''
Taweep Jantararoj, the president of Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand, said all Thai fighters won in a straightforward manner with the presence of the Aiba president.

''We won every fight fairly,'' Gen Taweep said. ''All referees were from neutral countries like Australia and Europe.''

The first gold medal of the day was won by Dueannapha who stopped Ven Vu Thi Hai of Vietnam in the second round of the pinweight final.

Light-flyweight Sopida, who was fighting in her first international event, clinched a 18-6 win over Alice Kate Apari of the Philippines.

Light-bantamweight, Usanakorn defeated Annalisa Cruz of the Philippines for her second straight SEA Games gold. She was the only Thai women's boxer to win gold at the previous tournament in the Philippines.

''My opponent has improved but that was not enough,'' Usanakorn said.

Tassamalee beat Jouveliet Chilem 17-12 avenging her defeat against the Filipina at the 2005 Games.

Peamwilai secured a 19-0 win over Ronijen Sofla as the Philippines were furious at the one-sided result.

The men's gold-medal round takes place today and Taweep is confident that his fighters will make a clean sweep in 10 finals.

Venue : Wat Ratchaorasaram, Chom Thong district

Rama lll was an efficient merchant since his youth as Prince Chetsadabodin. He was so highly successful that his royal father teasingly called him “Chaosua”(millionaire in Chinese). He was keen on Chinese artistic style. He had it integreated with traditional Thai style, which was later khown as the “royally preferred artistic style.”
The very first temple the king had tried this idea on was Wat Chom Thong, an old Ayutthaya temple almost entirely renovated with adittonal donations from Cjinese merchants at Sampheng and Chinese craftsmen. Rama ll re-named it Wat Ratchaorot, meaning the temple of a king’s son. The architectural style here has been considered prototypical of rama lll’s ‘preferred artistic style’ before his enthronement.Other dignitaries later emulated the style in other temples.
Many visitors to the monastic quarters may not notice a small stone seat under atree near the hall. Don’t ever take a rest upon it for it was Rama lll’s royal reat during his visit to supervise the construction.

Who Is Guan Yin?
Guan Yin, one of the most revered Chinese goods, is the goddess of mercy who,

was born a princess, a daughter of a Chinese emperor who was not a Buddhist.
He was furious to see his daughter’s devotion to Buddhism. Before her marriage,
the princess escaped from the palace and set free several tortured prisoners.
Many oppressed people followed her.
When her father was gaining on them, a magic bridgeappeared to save the princess and her follwers. Soon her father was seriously ill. The doctor told her that the
only cure includes the arms and eyes of a virgin. With  her gratitude for her father, the princess agreed to  sacrifice herself. Her father was miraculously healed.
As s consequence of her sacrifice and her willing to help those in miseries, people came to worship her as a goodess, a significant one in the Chinese Pantheon.

The ancient temple was formerly caller Wat Moo, moo meaning pig, as it was built on Iand used for a pig farm and pigs were allowed, to remain in the area. The prang of Wat Arun on the bank of Ch Phraya River is one of Bangkok 's world-famous landmarks. From a French map of Thonburi made in the reign of King Narai it can be seen that the temple existed when Ayutthaya was Siam 's capital. The temple was formerly known as Wat Makok, and when King Taksin built his palace, he ordered the temple to be annexed to it. The king restored it and renamed it "Wat Jaeng". It was restored again by King Rama II, and renamed "Wat Arunratchatharam". King Rama IV later changed the name to "Wat Arunratchawararam"
Ubosot: This is an outstanding example of Rama II period architecture in late Ayutthaya style. It has a two-tiered roof with glazed ceramics, and pediments decorated with wooden carvings depicting Warunthep. The interior murals were painted during the Third and Fifth Reigns. Phra Phutthathammitsararatchalokthatdilok, the principal Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture, was cast in the reign of King Rama II and contains relics of King Rama II.
Prang: This brick stupa is decorated with glazed pottery fragments in flower and leaf designs and other Thai patterns. The top is gilded and adorned with the noppasul.
Pra Rabiengkote: This corridor is in placeof the kampaeng kaeo found in most other tempi It has a tiled roof with doors opening onto f directions. Inside are 120 Buddha images in Subduing Mara posture.
Mondop of the Buddha's Footprint: A chapel surmounted by a spire, this stands between the ubosot and the wihan. It was built during the Third Reign and houses a copy of the footprint of the Budd a carved in Kwantong stone and decorated with colourful porcelain.

Ogre Statues: Guarding at the gate are two ogre (yaksha). The white yaksha is Sahassadecha and i green partner Thossakun, the villain of the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Ramayana epic.
